Borescope Inspection

The Borescope Inspection is a crucial tool for inspecting power plant components. It is commonly used in high-value rotating power plant equipment like steam turbines, gas turbines, and generators. Additionally, it is highly beneficial for inspecting the internal or external surfaces of the boiler and HRSG tubes and piping.

Borescope inspections, also known as “remote visual inspections” or RVI, involve using flexible or rigid optical devices that allow inspectors to examine hard-to-reach areas.

Early borescopes were basic tubes, but modern versions feature cameras and typically lights at the probe’s end. Premium models boast articulated heads and superior optics. Hardware selection often hinges on the task; basic scopes suffice for inspecting wider pipes.

How Borescope Inspection Work

A borescope inspection is an optical device used to visually access concealed areas. It is inserted into the object under evaluation without causing damage to the object of interest.

A Borescope can consist of:

Rigid or flexible working length
Light Source to illuminate the target under inspection.
Optical system that may consist of a relay lens system, rod lens system, fiber optic image guide a CCD or CMOS camera.
Eyepiece or Monitor to view the image

Applications:

Borescopes are utilized to non-destructively inspect industrial systems and equipment for condition, manufactured parts for quality and security, and law enforcement for contraband, intelligence, and safety.
